What to say, word for word
When the tower falls and the tears come
“Argh, that's so frustrating. You worked hard on that.”
Feeling first. A child mid-frustration can't hear a lesson yet.
“What did that fall teach you? Wobbly bottom, or too heavy up top?”
Turns the wreckage into information. That's the whole growth-mindset move, one question long.
“You can't do it yet. Yet is the important word.”
One word reframes ability as a work in progress rather than a verdict.
What's normal at this age
Before anything else: none of this means something is wrong.
Giving up fast and declaring 'I can't do it' around 4 to 6, right when they start comparing themselves to others.
Rage at a collapsed creation that looks out of proportion. Their effort was real, so the loss is too.
Avoiding things they aren't instantly good at. Worth watching: it hardens into a habit by about 8.
Good moments for this story: When your child gives up quickly on building or craft projects; After a frustrating failure (a tower falling, a drawing going wrong); When the child says 'I can't do it' or 'I'm not good at this'; Before activities that involve trial and error; When you want to shift from 'not yet' frustration to curiosity about what went wrong.
What's actually happening
Carol Dweck's (2006) work popularised two mindsets: fixed ('I'm smart or I'm not') and growth ('I can get better with effort'). How much mindset programmes actually shift children's achievement is still debated — recent meta-analyses of the intervention research range from little effect under strict conditions (Macnamara & Burgoyne, 2023) to small, targeted benefits (Burnette et al., 2023). The praise finding is narrower and worth keeping. Mueller & Dweck (1998) found that children praised for being 'smart' went on to avoid challenges, while children praised for effort sought them out, and the difference showed up after a single interaction. Building activities suit this kind of praise because failure is visible, tangible and fixable.
What parents usually try
"You're so clever!"
Ability praise creates pressure to maintain the label. Mueller & Dweck (1998) found that 'smart'-praised children chose easier tasks and lied about their scores more often than effort-praised children.
Fixing it for them
Solves the immediate frustration but teaches that struggle means you need someone else to step in. The child misses the experience of fixing it themselves.
"It doesn't matter if it breaks"
Dismisses the child's investment. It does matter to them. Acknowledging the frustration ('That's really frustrating — what could you try differently?') is more effective.
What actually helps
The story models what Dweck calls 'process praise' in narrative form. The character isn't praised for being brilliant — they're shown persisting through failure and learning from each attempt. The story makes the failures interesting, not shameful: each one reveals something new about how the invention could work. This mirrors engineering education approaches where failure analysis is explicitly valued (Petroski, 2006). The child absorbs the message that struggle is part of making things work, not evidence that they can't.
What your child hears
Your child's character builds something that doesn't work — three times. But each failure teaches them something new. The final version isn't perfect. It's theirs.
Research on how children respond to praise (Mueller & Dweck, 1998) suggests effort-praise helps children stay with a task after failure. The story models the messy middle of invention — where learning actually happens.

Replay it and count the character's failed attempts on your fingers together. Three tries is the plot, and that's the point.

During their next project, borrow the story's rhythm: 'Attempt number two! What are we changing?' Keep score of attempts, never of successes.
