Extremely intense interests turn up in roughly a third of children under six, usually starting around 18 months, and far more often in boys (DeLoache et al., 2007). Far from being meaningless obsessions, these interests give children early practice at sustained attention and organising what they know. In one classic case study, a 4-year-old dinosaur enthusiast's knowledge mapped as an expert-like network of linked concepts, and he remembered best the dinosaurs his knowledge connected most richly (Chi & Koeske, 1983). Dinosaurs are among the most common of these interests, and the learning is real: the child is practising categorisation, chronology and comparative reasoning without knowing it.

Undermines the child's internal motivation. Intense interests are a normal, productive part of early childhood (DeLoache et al., 2007), and the skills they exercise (categorising, sustained attention, information-seeking) go with the child to the next topic.
Quizzing them on dinosaur facts
Turns play into performance. Children explore more, and discover more, when an adult isn't steering (Bonawitz et al., 2011).
Buying more dinosaur merchandise
Not harmful, but passive consumption doesn't build thinking skills. Active exploration (digging, drawing, questioning) is what creates the learning (Hirsh-Pasek et al., 2015).
