When the plan changes

“Change of plan. Swimming is cancelled. Here's what happens instead: home, snack, park.”
The new sequence, immediately and concretely. The gap where the plan used to be is the scary part.
“You feel cross because you expected swimming. Expecting one thing and getting another feels bad.”
Literal validation. No talking them out of it, just naming what happened inside.
“Some days have surprises. Surprise days still end with dinner, bath and your own bed.”
The end-of-day anchors survive any change. Point at them.

Before anything else: none of this means something is wrong.

Distress at changes that look tiny to adults: a different cup, a different route, a substitute teacher.
Needing to know the day's shape each morning, and rechecking it through the day.
Change tolerance shrinking when tired, hungry or already stretched. The same swap lands differently at 5pm.

Good moments for this story: Before any known routine change (substitute teacher, schedule change, cancelled event); When transitions between activities are consistently difficult; Before travel or holidays that disrupt daily routines; When the child is starting a new routine (new school, new activity); As a general resilience-building story about managing the unexpected.

What's actually happening.

Resistance to routine change is common in all young children but can be particularly intense for autistic and neurodivergent children. An intense need for sameness has been part of how autism is understood since Kanner's first account of it (1943). Routine provides predictability, which reduces cognitive load: the child doesn't have to figure out what happens next because they already know. When routine breaks, the child faces a sudden increase in uncertainty and information processing demands. The evidence base here is small but points one way — in early single-case research, Flannery & Horner (1994) found that students with developmental disabilities showed far less problem behaviour when upcoming events were signalled in advance. The child isn't being inflexible. They're managing a genuine cognitive challenge.

Springing changes without warning
Avoids anticipatory anxiety but removes the child's ability to prepare. Advance notice, even brief, gives the child a chance to prepare (Flannery & Horner, 1994).
"Just go with the flow"
Assumes cognitive flexibility that may not yet be developed. Flexibility is a skill that develops through practice with support, not through exposure to chaos (Kenworthy et al., 2014).
Over-detailed explanations of why the change happened
The child may not care why — they need to know what happens now. Concrete, sequential information about the new plan is more helpful than reasons for the old one changing.

Social narratives for routine changes follow Gray's (2010) structure adapted for transitions: describe the routine, introduce the change, show the character's feelings (validated, not corrected), and walk through the new plan step by step. Kenworthy et al. (2014) tested a school programme that taught flexibility through scripts, guided practice and visual cues; children improved at making transitions and handling change in the classroom. The story doesn't promise the change will be fun — it makes the change predictable, which is what the child actually needs.

When a real change is coming, listen again and walk the new plan step by step, twice. Twice matters.

When a story isn't enough.

If changes routinely end in long shutdowns or panic, and forewarning plus rehearsal isn't touching it, talk to your GP or an early-intervention service about what's underneath. Rigidity this strong is a signal worth following up, not a phase to wait out.
