Fuel for the fantasy

“I wonder what's behind it. You saw it first, so you decide.”
Ownership of the fantasy is the entire value. Resist supplying the castle.
“What are the rules in that world? What's allowed there that isn't allowed here?”
Rules-of-the-world questions stretch the imagining beyond a single picture.
“Can we come back through the door in time for dinner?”
Joining the game instead of ending it gets you invited into their world.

Elaborate imaginary worlds and friends, strongest between 3 and 7. This is the peak season; enjoy it.
The line between fantasy and reality being genuinely blurry at 3 and mostly solid by 6.
The same pretend scenario replayed for weeks. Repetition is rehearsal; they're refining something.

Good moments for this story: When your child is in an imaginative phase, making up worlds; Before a quiet, wind-down period — the story ends with a gentle return; When you want to spark creative play and 'what if' thinking; As a regular adventure story with no specific developmental target; When your child asks 'What if...?' questions about impossible things.

What's actually happening.

Portal narratives, where the child enters an imaginary world, are a rich cognitive exercise. Vygotsky (1978) argued that imaginative play creates a 'zone of proximal development' where children operate above their everyday level, and in Singer & Singer's (2005) research, children who often engaged in elaborate pretend scenarios also tended to show stronger executive function: planning, mental flexibility and working memory. Whether pretend play builds these capacities or simply travels with them is genuinely debated — the most thorough review concluded the causal evidence isn't there yet (Lillard et al., 2013). What's not debated is that imagining a coherent alternative world asks the child to hold multiple reality frames at once, and this story gives them somewhere to practise.

Directing the fantasy ('The door leads to a castle!')
Adult-directed fantasy reduces the child's sense of ownership. The point of the game is that the child generates the world; once an adult supplies it, they're following instead of imagining.
Making it educational ('What colour is the door?')
Instrumentalising imagination reduces intrinsic motivation, and intrinsic motivation is what creative engagement runs on (Amabile, 1996).
Cutting short ('That's silly')
Dismissing imaginative play tells the child their internal world isn't valued. Children whose pretend play is encouraged tend to show better emotional regulation and social competence (Singer & Singer, 2005).

The world beyond is coherent, vivid, and responsive to the child's choices. This models what developmental psychologists call 'world-building play': the creation of internally consistent imaginary environments that exercise cognitive flexibility, narrative thinking, and creative confidence.
