Grandparent-grandchild bonds are attachment relationships in their own right (Smith & Drew, 2002) — warm, indulgent, and largely free of the disciplinary tension built into parenting. This is a developmentally distinct relationship with its own function, not spoiling. Attar-Schwartz et al. (2009) found that grandparent involvement was associated with fewer emotional and behavioural difficulties in young people, and Ruiz & Silverstein (2007) found the relationship mattered most for those growing up in families under strain, such as after separation or divorce.

Limiting grandparent indulgence
Some boundaries are necessary, but the 'special rules at grandparent's house' aren't weakness — they're a feature. The contrast itself teaches children that different relationships have different qualities (Smith & Drew, 2002).
Assuming the relationship will develop naturally
Geography, technology barriers, and limited visits can weaken the bond. Mueller & Elder (2003) found that close grandparent bonds grow out of real contact and shared involvement, not the family tie alone. Stories, calls and rituals are the raw material.
Using grandparents primarily as childcare
Regular care builds familiarity, but shared activities, rituals and family stories are what give the bond its own identity. Silverstein & Marenco (2001) documented how much of the grandparent role is lived through exactly these — outings, traditions, keeping the family's stories.

This narrative preservation is what therapists call 'creating a coherent attachment narrative' (Main et al., 1985): helping the child build a stable, positive internal representation of an important relationship.
