World-building, creating internally consistent imaginary environments, is one of the most cognitively demanding forms of imaginative play. Craft (2001) described 'possibility thinking' as the core of childhood creativity: the ability to ask 'What if?' and follow the implications. When children imagine a world with different rules (rain falls upward, clouds are solid), they exercise the same cognitive flexibility used in scientific hypothesis-testing and creative problem-solving. In Singer & Singer's (2005) research, children who engaged in elaborate world-building play also tended to show better executive function: planning, mental flexibility and working memory.

Making it realistic ('Clouds are just water vapour')
Scientific accuracy has its place, but during imaginative play it undermines the cognitive exercise. The value is in the imagining, not the accuracy (Craft, 2001).
Directing the world ('The clouds should be pink!')
The imagining only stretches the child if the ideas are theirs. Whether pretend play causes cognitive gains or simply travels with them is debated (Lillard et al., 2013), but following someone else's script isn't world-building at all.
Dismissing the fantasy
Children whose imaginative play is validated tend to show better emotional regulation and creative output (Singer & Singer, 2005). Dismissal teaches them that their inner world doesn't matter.
