World-building - creating internally consistent imaginary environments - is one of the most cognitively demanding forms of imaginative play. Craft (2001) described 'possibility thinking' as the core of childhood creativity: the ability to ask 'What if?' and follow the implications. When children imagine a world with different rules (rain falls upward, clouds are solid), they exercise the same cognitive flexibility used in scientific hypothesis-testing and creative problem-solving.
